Abstract

For many years, chemical plants, refineries, oil drillers, fuel depots, service stations, and other petroleum handlers have been careless in their methods of waste disposal. Petroleum products have been dumped into the ground and water supplies, without any regard for environmental pollution. Most polluters thought the soil would absorb the petroleum products or the groundwater would wash them away. However, we all now know that most petroleum products do not break down in soil or water, and we are now faced with a huge pollution problem. This country, as well as all other industrialized nations, must find effective means to remove petroleum products from soil and water supplies, and keep the contaminants from reaching the food chain.
