Abstract

Cleanup of contaminated soils is often the most important aspect of rapid, costeffective remediation at sites contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. A leaky tank or pipeline, surface spill, or other release can quickly contaminate a large volume of subsurface soil and rock. Frequently, underground pollution problems go undetected for years. Once contaminants seep underground, they spread continually; resulting groundwater and soil contamination is responsible for numerous abandoned water supply wells, inoperable utility systems, and deadly explosions.
