Abstract

Contamination of groundwater is being detected with increasing frequency and it is linked to adverse health, economic, environmental, and social impacts. But no source of groundwater contamination, save perhaps septic systems, is as pervasive and widely distributed as leaking underground petroleum storage tanks. Statistics published recently by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) illuminate the magnitude of the potential problem. 1 , 2
