Structural Modification of Diamond Subjected to High Energy Ion Irradiation
Abstract
High energy ion implantation in diamond leads to formation of specific extended defects—tracks along the ion paths [ 1 , 2 ]. The ion track is believed to be a rod-like macrodefect with a lower atom density along the ion path and an envelope of which has an enhanced atom density. It is proposed that modified regions with nontetrahedral interatomic bondings are created inside individual track due to atomic reconstruction processes during high energy ion implantation. Transport phenomena in these structures can be realized by means of mobile quasi-particles like solitons.
