Abstract

Thermal treatment is known to induce thermal oxidation of the polyether soft segments of thermoplastic polyurethanes. Our investigations prove that oxidation of the central methylene unit of MDI with the formation of benzophenone type structure is also of major importance to the thermal aging of MDI-TPU. The oxidation of MDI results in a pronounced decrease of both amount and size of the rigid phase as solid state NMR indicates. The loss in rigid phase is responsible for the deterioration of mechanical properties.
