Abstract

This chapter is concerned with assessing the road-damaging potential of dynamic tyre forces generated by articulated heavy goods vehicles. The European suspension assessment test is reviewed. Various testing factors are discussed, including: (i) general testing methodologies; (ii) road damage issues such as ‘spatial repeatability’ of dynamic tyre forces and road damage criteria; (iii) vehicle response issues, such as test duration and data sampling details, road roughness, testing speed and wheelbase filtering. Various conclusions are drawn about the requirements for objective suspension assessment.
