Abstract

A number of factors which affect the evaluation of lateral earth pressure and retaining wall design was reviewed. The factors include the stiffness of the underlying foundation soil, the use of soft clay backfills, cyclic vertical wall movements, repeated surcharge loading on the backfill surface. The influences of wall geometry and choice of angle of wall friction on wall safety with respect to overturning and sliding have also been examined.
