Abstract

Model tests of slope failure were performed on compacted volcanic cohesive soil. The results of the investigation show that: (1) Seepage water is one of the main causes of the slope failure; and depends on both the amount of precipitation and precipitation intensity. (2) The piezometer heads at the places of the slope failure have extremely higher levels than the soil layer surface. (3) The strength of the soil decreases about a half value at places influenced by the seepage water. Therefore, the major cause of the slope failure concern to the groundwater is the decrease of the strength of the ground due to the seepage water.
