Abstract

The properties and behaviour of some soft clay deposits in Indonesia are discussed. Quite significant areas of the country are covered in compressible materials of recent volcanic origin. Most have been deposited in a marine environment, but a notable exception is the Bandung lake material, salient features of which are also summarised. Swelling soils are also found and reference is made to one example in East Java. The importance of establishing suitable characteristic design parameters for these deposits is demonstrated.
