Wave pressure reduction through a submerged plate
Abstract
The hydrodynamic wave pressures acting on a vertical quay caused by a submerged thin plate placed before the quay have been investigated both numerically and experimentally. Good agreements between experimental and numerical results were achieved. It was found that wave pressure of short period waves could be reduced effectively through this arrangement. The optimal submergence depth was found to be equal to d =0.25h rather than 0.50h, where h is the water depth. However, at this depth, d = 0.2 5h, the pressure-reduction effect will change according to the wave characteristics, the width of the plate, i, as well as the distance of the plate away from the wall, w. Furthermore, it was found that wider plates affect longer waves more profoundly. The reflection coefficients obtained from numerical analyses were found to be in reasonable agreements with experiments for nonbreaking waves.
