Abstract

In this paper, a finite difference method for shallow water equations is presented and discussed. The differential equations have been discretized with a semi-implicit technique, in such a way that, at each time step, a linear five-diagonals system has to be solved. The numerical model applied to the Gulf of La Spezia has been calibrated on an experimental basis and results have been compared with observed data. The simulations allow the different role of forcing terms, i.e. tide and wind stress, as well as the impact of a breakwater over the marine circulation, to be understood.
