Abstract

Comparisons between the results deduced by linear numerical simulation of random sea states on deep water and those obtained from several field sea states recorded offshore Naples Gulf are carried out. For each sea state the heights and periods of the characteristic waves, the partial and total lenghts of the wave groups, the occurrence probabilities of these lenghts are evaluated and the groupiness behaviour is analyzed with regard to some groupiness parameters. Evidence is given that linear numerical simulations are able to reproduce quite faithfully the characteristic waves and the wave grouping of the sea states.
