Modelling upwelling along a shelf break in high latitudes
Abstract
A 2.5D baroclinic ocean model is presented to simulate the upwelling processes along the continental slope and along a marginal ice edge. Two different cases are considered, a flat bottom and a shelf/ocean one. The water is forced by a wind blowing parallel to the coast in upwelling favorable direction and by density gradients due to melting of ice. The wind induces a flow perpendicular to the coast and upwelling is occuring at the slope and the ice edge. The upwelling decreases when an ice cover and density stratification is existing.
