Application of mathematical models in urban wastewater management: The ocean outfall of Pinedo (Valencia, Spain)
Abstract
A set of mathematical models was applied to help manage urban wastewater. They were specifically used to decide upon the site of a large ocean outfall on the coast of Valencia (Spain). The main aim was to choose a location where the risk of eutrophication of the area as a result here of would be reduced to a minimum and which would comply with present Spanish legislation as far as its effects on sensitive areas was concerned. The study includes an extensive sampling campaign to appraise the real situation and evolution of the area throughout the year. Calibration of the model was carried out with https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> NO 3 - , NH 4 + , total P and chlorophyll a data, and the influence of the different parameters of the model, obtained from values in the literature, was estimated.
