Abstract

The primary aim of this paper is to investigate the short-term static lateral loading on steel-pipe piles. This study is divided into two parts: one is numerical model. the other is experimental research. In the case of computer calculation the finite element programme can be used for modelling a pile as a beam on a elastoplastic foundation. Based on the nonlinear Winkler model. the soil reaction around the pile can offer the soil stiffness as a function of both load level and depth. The parameters requ i red for computer porgral.me can be measured by tht! traditional triaxial and direct shear tests. The force versus deflection curve. i.e. p-y curve. obtained from static measurement are used to predict pile lateral capacity. These experimental results will compare with the results of numerical analysis. The compared results are in agreement with expectancy. Particularly. one obtains a good conclusion. that is. for L/D=IO--15 (L=Length of pile. D=Diameter of pile). the opened end pile has more lateral capacity than the closed end pile does. However. for one gets the reverse results.
