Abstract

This paper presents the free vibration analysis of plates of variable thickness by a newly developed spline finite element. The formulation of the element is based on the classical Kirchhoff’s plate theory and it employs two-dimensional spline functions for the interpolation of displacements. Numerical examples for plates of continuously variable as well as discontinuous thicknesses are given to demonstrate the accuracy and versatility of the approach.
