Abstract

The behaviour of stiffened plate box structures based on a simple pre-defined load path is vastly different from the actual behaviour when the structure acts as an integrated unit. The analysis of such structures based on simple load paths ignores the interaction between various structural components and hence leads to a conservative design. This paper describes the results of the structural analysis of an Electrostatic Precipitator shell using a linear finite element approach. The shell consists of stiffened plate elements as side panels which are welded together to form the external housing for the precipitator. It is shown that the interaction between various components of the precipitator is appreciable. The consideration of these interactions can lead to a more economical design. The possible areas of design improvements will also be pointed out.
