Abstract

In this paper, the nonlinear and nonhomogeneous properties of material caused by temperature variance are considered, and low-temperature shrinkage stresses and displacements in cracked asphalt pavements are analyzed with the use of the finite element method. And stress intensity factors at the crack tip are calculated by introducing singularity elements. The numerical results show, when surface temperature is lower than ~10*C> asphalt pavements could produce unstable low-temperature shrinkage crackes on its surface; on the other hand, the reflective crackes could be the main cause for asphalt pavements cracking in the south of China.
