Abstract

The correctness of a finite element analysis program does not guarantee acceptable and accurate results as approximation is always involved. However today reliable error estimates allow the accuracy to be assessed and automatic procedures of refinement can achieve user specified accuracy. We survey in this paper the achievements in this field and indicate some very recent processes improving the reliability of error estimation.
