Abstract

Most high-rise buildings are asymmetric as they are unsymmetrical in plan and/or elevation or they have unsymmetrical mass distribution in the floors. Due to this there is coupling between the lateral and torsional components of the building response when subjected to lateral loads. The location of vertical members, especially heavy service cores and/or shear walls influence the amount of torsional coupling which in turn influences the building response. In this paper the effects of eccentrically locating vertical members on the response of high-rise buildings are investigated and the results discussed.
