Abstract

In developing a mathematical model for the behaviour of a steel plane frame, the analysis must simulate connection flexibility and allow for the possibility of different ductile modes of failure, if the required accuracy of the theoretical behaviour is to be achieved. Realistic modelling of a connection zone needs to take account of the structural actions that can occur at the bolted connection interface, and in the associated column member, together with any web stiffening that might be required. This paper concentrates on the development of a shear hinge and its subsequent behaviour within the context of the connection zone at the eaves position of a portal frame. The formulation of the mathematical model is outlined, and deals with both linear and inelastic behaviour, and in particular out-of-plane buckling. The required accuracy of the theoretical simulations (including stiffened webs) produced by the mathematical model is established by comparison with experimental evidence.
