Abstract

A constitutive model based on elasto-plasticity theory is proposed here to describe the behavior of interfaces subjected to monotonic loading. The model considers non-associative and strain-softening behavior in the hierarchical manner. A parameter called “interface roughness ratio, R” is defined to quantify roughness of interfaces. Model parameters are determined using data from laboratory simple shear tests on the interfaces. The proposed model is verified by comparing the model predictions with the test data on sand-steel interfaces under various roughnesses, normal stresses and initial densities of sand.
