Controls exerted by dominant parting planes over the deformation of tabular deposits
Abstract
The paper argues that distinct features termed “dominant parting planes” control the deformation of tabular deposits, particularly with regard to the release of strain energy around an excavation. These features are activiated in shear at some distance from the excavation and may permit subsequent rock failure in a tensile mode due to the associated reduction in lateral confining stresses. Evidence to support the arguement is presented from a number of field observations, including seismicity associated with mine working.
