Abstract

This paper describes the various avenues being studied by Hydro-Qudbec to satisfy electricity demand beyond the year 2000. It notes their principal technical, environmental and economic characteristics and compares them on this basis. It also proposes certain types of installations suitable for each avenue. These are proposals that Hydro-Qudbec will be submitting in the spring of 1992 as part of a consultation process. According to Hydro-Qudbec’s analysis, hydroelectricity is by far the most promising avenue in technical, economic and environmental terms. However, nuclear power plants and, to a lesser extent, wind power and thermal plants using biomass could make a contribution in the future. Consultations will enable the public to express opinions on the possible choices.
