Hydropower and the Lesotho Highlands Water Project
Abstract
Various hydropower options considered during the planning of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project are described with details of the optimisation studies leading to the recommended 72 MW layout for Phase I. Hydraulic design and transient analyses are described with particular reference to the implications of the hydropower plant being supplied directly from a 45km long tunnel. The hydropower potential, included pumped storage, of later phases is indicated.
