How can developing countries contribute to clean hydroelectric energy production?
Abstract
Much of the world’s remaining unexploited hydro power potential is found in the developing countries. These resources of clean energy can meet part of the growing demand for electricity in the third world. The industrialized countries have realized that their own dependence on fossile fuel for energy generation is a threat to the global environment. But the developing countries are still moving in the same direction. The negative impact on the environment of increased energy demand in these countries would be reduced if they made full use of their big potential for hydroelectric energy production. This is possible only if industrialized countries provide capital on reasonable terms. An effort must also be made to establish an internationally recognized basis for joint development of common rivers by neighbouring countries.
