Abstract

During more than 100 years of hydropower development, Norwegian engineers have introduced several noteworthy methods and techniques which have been put to worldwide use becoming known as Norwegian specialities. The overriding idea has been to use rock as a structural element and to develop and improve cost-saving solutions in tunnels and caverns. By going underground greater freedom is gained to arrange reservoirs, waterways and power stations in a more cost-effective way than placing them stepwise along the river course. The Collect-and-Transfer System was a result of the underground development. These solutions of underground development also usually have less impact on the environment. The surplus excavated rock masses are mostly used to restore the landscape.
