Some technical problems in the construction of a tunnel in soft rock
Abstract
Tunnelling in soft rock had long been a challenge to engineers. Technical problems met during the construction of the 15.723 Km Pandaoling (PDL) Tunnel in the Northwest of China, may have been one of the most challenging. Stability, tunnelling under adverse geological conditions, cracking of the final concrete lining and other problems, required detailed analysis and cautious considera-don. This paper is a brief summary of some problems encountered, tunnelling methods, some innovative analytical approaches and their application during construction of PDL Tunnel.
