Abstract

Significant flexibility in Hydro Power Scheme Design has been obtained over the last decades based on - Developing the hydro power schemes underground - A highly developed tunneling technique which also allows for a substantial cost reduction - Modern engineering geology. The flexibility affords a new approach to plant layout, - the search for alternative solutions, the search for alternative intakes, reservoirs and power house. The whole scheme may be studied more freely, looking for the environmentally and economically most favourable solutions. Even very complex tunnel systems will have only minor impact on the overall cost.
