Abstract

Water power stations have a long life span, usually, 60-100 years. During this time period conditions can be changed in such a way that the original criteria for dimensioning no longer provide satisfactory safety. The need for improving the surge safety in existing underground water power stations and a method of achieving this with low building costs and short shutdown periods is presented in this paper.
