The trans-national supply of hydropower
Abstract
Economy requires hydro schemes to be developed to their optimum size regardless of the power demand in their vicinity. The exploitation of power markets further afield can lead to progressive interconnection of national electricity networks and to substantial trans-national power flows. Realisation of the benefits that can be achieved in this way tends to encourage closer operational integration of neighbouring power systems with national boundaries becoming increasingly less relevant. The nature, significance and future prospects of this development are discussed in this paper.
