Peak power — The optimum operation of a hydropower plant
Abstract
The paper describes peak power operation as an alternative for energy operation of hydropower plants. Changing political situations create new possibilities fur international cooperation within distribution of electric energy. The possible connection to markets dominated by thermal power plants can result in new hydropower plants meant for peak power only. The paper gives information on two hydropower schemes in Norway and Lesotho and discuss the environmental benefit from hydroelectric versus thermoelectric peak power.
