An input-output analysis of a transition from hydropower to thermopower
Abstract
Input-output analysis was applied to characterize the changes in the usage of different energy sources in the electricity generation in Portugal between 1971 and 1990, a period when this country has undergone a transition from a hydropower based system to a thermal one. The analysis was based on the Portuguese government data-base on energy and divides the energy system in four sectors: coal, liquid fuels, gaseous fuels and electricity. This paper describes the evolution of the national electric power production system and the methodology used to create special input-output matrices for energy purposes.
