Abstract

This paper describes the design, construction and performance of a 40m high, 210m long reinforced fill structure built on Tsing Yi Island in Hong Kong as part of the Route 3/Lantau Fixed Crossing project - one of 10 major projects forming the HK Government’s Airport Core Programme. The design was carried out in accordance with the guidelines given in the Geotechnical Control Office publication Geospec2. Construction of the wall, and associated filling was carried out over a total period of about sixteen months from October 1992 to February 1994. An instrumentation scheme comprising piezometers, inclinometers and earth pressure cells was installed and monitoring of these, together with precise line and level surveys, yielded data on the performance of the structure both during and post construction.
