Abstract

Solar electromagnetic radiation is recognized as the primary and almost the sole source of energy for myriads of physical and biological processes on our planet Earth. It drives atmospheric and oceanic circulations, and causes droughts over the vast subtropical continents. But solar radiation also supplies the energy needed for all forms of life on Earth. There are, therefore, many reasons to measure the amounts and variations of available radiation as well as the variations over each part of the globe as accurately as possible.
