Abstract

The satellite METEOSAT 2 was launched in June 1981. In June 1988 it was replaced by METEOSAT 3. It carried, as all others of this satellite series, a three-channel imaging radiometer to measure the radiances upwelling from Earth to space within three spectral ranges (solar: 0.4-1.1 μ m; emission by upper tropospheric water vapour: 5.7- 7.0 μ m; emission from surfaces: 10.5-12.5 μ m). Within the first and third spectral regions the cloud-free atmosphere is extremely transparent for radiation reflected and emitted, respectively, from ground to space. These regions are therefore called window regions.
