Abstract

Weakening of fault planes through pore pressure increase is widely thought to cause induced seismicity in the vicinity of man-made reservoirs. However, questions remain to be answered about the precise mechanisms by which water invades the plane of weakness to increase pore pressure, leading to failure. Any model for reservoir induced seismicity should be able to account for the following characteristics which have been observed at a variety of reservoir sites:\n
