Abstract

A microseismic monitoring system with a frequency range between 40 kHz and 400 kHz was used to record activity during the removal of a pillar in an underground hard rock mine. Event rate, amplitude distribution and energy content by frequency band were analysed. Patterns of changes in the data correlate very well with mining activity and observed changes in the rock mass. The system appears to be able to identify some of the complex changes which occur in a rock mass in response to a rapidly changing stress field. This Research project was funded by the Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada (MIROC).
