Rockbursts from a global perspective
Abstract
A survey of mining-associated seismicity parameters including type of ore, mining operation, magnitude-frequency relationships, maximum magnitude of events, depth and presence of precursory phenomena was compiled for various tectonic/geologic regions. Rockbursts and associated seismicity from the Republic of South Africa, Sweden, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Canada aand the United States were sorted according to type of geologic conditions and preexisting regional stress field. An attempt was made to divide the seismicity into two broad categories: seismicity directly-tied to mining activity and geometry (controlled by local fracturing), Type 1 and seismicity occurring on preexisting faults near the mine district, more similar to naturally occurring earthquakes, Type 11. Reliability of prediction schemes for the maximum size of mining-induced events based upon mine area, excavation volume, geology and extent of fracturing of adjacent rock is assessed with a special focus on different areas of the world.
