Abstract

Mechanical stabilization of soils by reinforcement with foreign materials is not a new idea, but has been used since time immemorial. The quality of adobe bricks has been improved by adding straw. Roads to swampy areas are often constructed on foundation of tree trunks and branches called corduroy roads. MSE consists of reinforcing the soil using polymer, steel, or natural materials. The reinforcement which is strong in tension effectively combines with the soil which is strong in compression, forming a strong and semi-rigid composite material.
