Abstract

From an imaginary earth model which is characterised by a succession of beds which have been given velocities, it is possible to determine the theoretical ray paths and from these, the corresponding horizons of a theoretical time section. Three diagrams: The top diagram, labelled Model, shows a cross-sectional view of subsurface layers with labelled regions 3, 6, and 7. The middle diagram, labelled Theoretical Ray Paths, illustrates the paths of seismic rays reflecting off the subsurface layers. The bottom diagram, labelled Synthetic Time Section, displays seismic wave arrivals with labelled horizons H.1, H.6, H.7, H.8, and H.9. The diagram demonstrates the process of seismic reflection used in geophysical exploration. https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href=" https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003761020/e10523ab-dbe3-4c4f-8f3e-863ae3683950/content/pg144_1.tif "/>
