Abstract

The amplitude of noise is of no more interest in itself than that of the signal (reflections). The important characteristic is that of the amplitude of the signal with respect to that of the noise. This is called the SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO which is given, by convention, in DECIBELS, the unit of attenuation or amplification introduced by acoustic and electronic engineers : given A and B the amplitude of two events; their separation in decibels is given, by definition : n in decibels https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> ( db ) = 20 l o g ⁡ A / B . If A>B , it is said that A is n decibels above B , or that B is n decibels below A .
