Abstract

The classic dynamic constants arise in the calculations of the resistance of materials. Those which concern the rocks are therefore the essential elements for civil engineering computations. From these constants velocities and densities may be derived : A diagram showing mathematical relationships between elastic wave velocities and material properties. Boxes labelled P wave velocity, S wave velocity, and density connect to equations defining rigidity, Poisson’s ratio, Young’s ratio, and volume rigidity. The diagram presents formulas linking wave speeds and density to elastic constants, illustrating how rigidity = density times S wave velocity squared, and how Poisson’s ratio and elastic moduli are derived from velocity ratios. https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href=" https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003761020/e10523ab-dbe3-4c4f-8f3e-863ae3683950/content/pg65_1.tif "/>
