Abstract
It may happen that a WAVE refracted at the face of a MARKER has its path blocked by an obstacle (fault plane for example). The wave is reflected by this obstacle. The REFLECTED RAY normal to the obstacle returns to its point of origin by the same path. This is sketched below : A diagram illustrates how seismic waves propagate and reflect within the Earth's subsurface, aiding in the exploration and understanding of geological formations. It shows two layers of the Earth's subsurface with different velocities, labelled V subscript 1 and V subscript 2. Points A and B on the surface send and receive seismic waves. The waves reflect off the boundary between the two layers, creating angles of incidence and reflection. The diagram includes arrows indicating the direction of wave travel and dashed lines representing the reflected waves. The angles of incidence and reflection are marked with Greek letters gamma and lambda. https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href=" https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003761020/e10523ab-dbe3-4c4f-8f3e-863ae3683950/content/pg101_1.tif "/> A diagram illustrates the behaviour of seismic waves at boundaries between different media. It shows two horizontal lines labelled E prime and E, representing boundaries. A wave originates at point T prime, where it encounters the boundary E prime. The wave splits into three components: reflection, reflected refraction, and diffraction. The reflection component bounces back upwards, the reflected refraction component bends and continues through the medium, and the diffraction component spreads out from the boundary point T. The diagram labels these components to show their paths and interactions. https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href=" https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781003761020/e10523ab-dbe3-4c4f-8f3e-863ae3683950/content/pg101_2.tif "/>
