Abstract

As mentioned earlier in Sections 2.3 and 2.4, the mechanical properties of sandy and fine clayey eluvial soils are governed mainly by porosity. It is obvious that the type of soil and its petrographic composition and moisture content will also play a vital role in determining these properties. It has been reported by several researchers that the aforesaid is valid for all genetic soil groups. Hence, the standards [ 1 , 2 ] provide for compilation of region-wise tables of standard mechanical properties of soils, that are typical for a given region and belong to specific genetic soil groups. Such tables can be useful in correcting the mechanical properties of soils available from general standards to enhance their precision significantly.
