Abstract

An essential condition for reliable working of shallow foundations is due consideration of the non-uniform compressibility of eluvial soils resulting from the inhomogeneity and variation of geological conditions at the construction sites. The behaviour of buildings and structures is affected most by non-uniform compressibility of eluvial soils in plan. In this case, it is not always possible to achieve uniform settlement of the foundation even by varying the pressure transmitted to the base.
