Results from geotechnical tests on paper mill waste
Abstract
A wet fibrous waste is one by-product of a paper making process. This waste formed the major proportion of that from the process. Recent production rates were placing pressure on the available disposal area and a study of waste disposal practices was commissioned. The stability of the disposal area was of concern particularly if maximum storage capacity was required. Geotechnical strength, load-deformation and hydraulic conductivity tests were carried out in the field and laboratory. In some tests the fibrous waste responded as expected. However, some unexpected results were also achieved. The unexpected results had significant implications for the development of a waste management strategy in terms of waste disposal practices and long term leachate management.
