Behaviour of pollutants in soils
Abstract
Contaminated land cannot be successfully reclaimed unless the behaviour of the chemicals comprising the contamination is fully understood. Different chemical contaminants partition to varying degrees between the vapour, solid and liquid phases of the soil, and thus behave in different manners. This behaviour is dependent upon chemical and physical characteristics of such contaminants that will, in turn, govern the incidence of bioaccumulation, leaching and migration. Contaminant interaction with soils will therefore influence the integrity and life span of a reclamation scheme.
