Grouting of leaks in clay liners below bauxite residue deposits
Abstract
This paper describes the methods used to seal leakage through clay liners at the base of bauxite residue impoundments using grouting techniques. Grouting methods have involved the injection of a chemical grout into a basal sand layer at depths of over 20 metres. The works completed to date have resulted in residual leakage in areas grouted being reduced to less than 10% of that evident prior to grouting. Monitor bore observations show that grouting works have reduced the levels of ground water contamination markedly.
