Abstract

A promising alternative to conventional coal washery waste disposal is the co-disposal of tailings and coarse reject by combined pumping. The mixture formed has greatly enhanced geotechnical engineering properties over those of tailings alone, greatly facilitating rehabilitation to a high level of future land use. There is also potential to form a self-supporting elevated landform on disposal of the mixture, obviating the need for major retaining structures. The inclusion of fine waste with the coarse waste also inhibits oxidation of the coarser particles. The paper describes the important geotechnical properties associated with coal washery waste mixtures relevant to their co-disposal and subsequent rehabilitation, giving data obtained from three coal mines in Queensland.
